American detained in Russia reported 'near death' amid rising tensions

An American citizen, Robert Gilman, who has been detained in Russia since 2022, is reportedly "near death" in a Russian hospital, according to his family and their advocates. Gilman, a 32-year-old former U.S. Marine and teacher, has been in a "dissociative stupor" for over six weeks and is currently receiving nourishment via a feeding tube while reportedly handcuffed to his hospital bed in a psychiatric ward. His health concerns, including a high fever and high blood pressure, have prompted significant alarm from his family and advocacy groups like Global Reach, who allege he has endured physical and psychological torture during his detention.

The U.S. State Department has expressed deep concern regarding Gilman's health and continued imprisonment, confirming that they have repeatedly raised his case with Russian authorities and formally requested his release on humanitarian grounds. Despite these diplomatic efforts, neither Gilman's mother nor his lawyer have been permitted to visit him since his transfer to the civilian hospital.
