UK counter-terrorism police take over Ann Widdecombe investigation

UK counter-terrorism police have taken charge of the investigation into the death of former politician Ann Widdecombe, who was found with serious injuries at her home on Thursday, July 9, 2026. A 28-year-old man was initially arrested on Saturday, July 11, on suspicion of murder following the discovery of her body.

The decision for counter-terrorism policing to lead the inquiry came on Monday, July 13, after new information and evidence emerged. Consequently, the arrested suspect was rearrested under suspicion of committing, preparing, or instigating acts of terrorism. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood confirmed that the individual in custody was not previously known to the government's Prevent anti-radicalisation program.
