Aung San Suu Kyi appears healthy in first confirmed outside contact for 2.5 years

Myanmar's ousted leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, held her first confirmed meeting with an outside official in over two and a half years on Monday, August 3, 2026, when she met with Arnaud de Baecque, the Resident Representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to Myanmar. This rare contact occurred in Naypyitaw, amid ongoing international concerns about her well-being and access to the outside world since her detention following the February 2021 military coup.

The military-backed government released photographs depicting the 81-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate appearing healthy and relaxed during the meeting. The images showed her shaking hands with the ICRC representative and, in one instance, cutting a birthday cake, though the exact date and location of the photos could not be independently verified. Suu Kyi has been largely isolated since the coup, during which her elected government was overthrown, leading to her being sentenced to 27 years in prison on charges widely considered politically motivated.

Her son, Kim Aris, who has actively campaigned for proof of his mother's life, welcomed the visit, expressing optimism that it could lead to further family contact and, eventually, her release along with other political prisoners. While Suu Kyi's sentence was recently commuted and she was moved to house arrest, the meeting with the ICRC official marks a significant, albeit limited, breakthrough in her access to international observers.
