Scientists at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) have unveiled the most extensive molecular map of autism to date, a breakthrough published in the journal *Science* on August 27, 2026. This landmark study, conducted by the Quantitative Biosciences Institute (QBI) and the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, identified over 1,800 protein interactions across 100 autism risk genes, with 87% of these interactions previously unknown. The researchers discovered that numerous genetic mutations linked to autism converge on a limited number of shared protein networks, providing a new understanding of how the condition develops at a molecular level.

This comprehensive "wiring diagram" of autism's molecular machinery offers a novel framework for developing targeted therapies. Instead of needing distinct treatments for each genetic variation, the findings suggest that interventions could focus on these common protein pathways, potentially leading to a new generation of precision medicines. The research, which utilized artificial intelligence and lab-grown brain organoids, is particularly relevant for individuals with profound autism.

To further advance this research and translate its findings into clinical applications, UCSF's QBI has been awarded a $46 million grant from Aligning Research to Impact Autism (ARIA). This funding will support efforts to move from molecular discovery to the development of new treatments for autism spectrum disorder.
