Biden audio recordings reveal 'classified' material references, memory struggles

Recently released audio recordings of President Joe Biden have brought renewed attention to his handling of classified materials and his cognitive fitness. The tapes include interviews Biden conducted with his ghostwriter for a 2017 memoir and with Special Counsel Robert Hur in October 2023 during an investigation into classified documents found at his home and office. These recordings reportedly contain instances where Biden discusses notes that may include classified information and exhibits struggles with his memory, leading to increased public scrutiny.

The audio of Biden's 2023 interview with Special Counsel Hur, investigating his retention of classified documents, revealed long pauses, halting speech, and difficulty recalling key dates such as the year his son Beau died or when Donald Trump was first elected president. Hur's subsequent 2024 report described Biden as a "sympathetic, well-meaning elderly man with a poor memory," and this assessment was a factor in the decision not to recommend criminal charges against him. More recently, around July 2026, roughly 70 hours of audio recordings from Biden's 2016 and 2017 conversations with his ghostwriter, Mark Zwonitzer, were released, having been previously cited in Hur's report. In these conversations, Biden is heard referencing potentially classified material and on occasion appearing to lose his train of thought.

The release of these recordings followed a protracted legal battle, with conservative groups successfully suing the Justice Department to make them public after Biden's legal team initially sought to block their disclosure. These audio files have since fueled ongoing public discussion regarding the former president's memory and his retention of sensitive government documents.
