Cryptocurrency exchange Binance recently suffered a staggering $6.3 billion hack, identified as the largest crypto heist in history. The attack, which occurred on October 29, 2026, saw funds drained from Binance's "hot wallets" across multiple blockchains. Authorities, including the FBI, and blockchain analytics firms have attributed the sophisticated breach to "TraderTraitor," a North Korean cybercrime group. The hackers reportedly gained initial access months prior through malware inadvertently downloaded by an engineer, and later used a recruitment scam involving fake job interviews to trick another engineer into compromising their system, ultimately leveraging an internal AI tool to execute unauthorized withdrawals. Binance has since committed to fully reimbursing affected users and stated it had covered approximately 95% of the stolen assets, with roughly $2.8 billion to $3 billion in stablecoins frozen by stablecoin providers.

Concurrently, a disturbing trend has emerged where scammers are exploiting grieving pet owners by using AI-generated images. These fraudsters target individuals who have posted about lost pets, typically by obtaining their contact information from flyers or social media. Posing as animal shelter staff or concerned citizens, the scammers falsely claim to have found the missing animal but assert it requires urgent, costly surgery. To lend credibility to their story, they send highly realistic, AI-fabricated images depicting the owner's pet injured or on an operating table. They then demand immediate payment, often through untraceable methods, before the supposed "surgery" can proceed. Warnings have been issued for pet owners to exercise extreme caution and verify any such claims directly with official shelters, as legitimate organizations do not typically request payment via text messages.
