Luis Manuel Aviles, a 48-year-old Nicaraguan national residing in Key West, Florida, was arrested by Border Patrol agents during a traffic stop on a recent Saturday. He is currently being held in ICE custody and faces deportation proceedings. The Department of Homeland Security stated that Aviles had entered the U.S. illegally, emphasizing that military family ties do not exempt individuals from immigration laws.

The arrest occurred while Aviles' son, Joshua Aviles, was serving his ninth month aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln. The aircraft carrier has been noted for its record-setting, uninterrupted deployment at sea, which has raised concerns regarding crew welfare. Joshua Aviles expressed profound distress over his father's detention, noting the difficulty of continuing his demanding service while his father is treated "like a criminal".
