An hours-long hostage situation and bomb threat at a Bakersfield, California, bank building concluded with the suspect dead and all hostages safely released. The incident began on a Tuesday afternoon when the suspect, Anthony Scott Searles-Harris, 41, barricaded himself inside a multi-story building that houses a Chase Bank branch and the Kern County Superintendent of Schools' Office. Searles-Harris took ten employees of the school superintendent's office hostage on the second floor, claiming to possess explosives and to have attached devices to some individuals.

Law enforcement, including Bakersfield police and the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team, responded to the scene, establishing a perimeter and initiating negotiations. Two hostages were released earlier during the standoff through these efforts. The crisis, lasting approximately 12 to 15 hours, ended early Wednesday morning when FBI personnel fatally shot Searles-Harris.

Following the intervention, all remaining hostages were found unharmed and received medical evaluations at the scene. Authorities identified Searles-Harris as an Army veteran who had been dishonorably discharged and a registered sex offender, though a motive for the incident remains under investigation.
