Youngest Black Professor at Cambridge Resigns Amid Plagiarism Allegations

Professor Jason Arday, recognized as Cambridge University's youngest Black professor, has resigned from his position amidst mounting plagiarism allegations and scrutiny into his academic and personal claims. His departure on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, came shortly after the university announced a new investigation into his qualifications and career. Arday had previously been appointed professor of sociology in 2023 at the age of 37.

The controversy primarily centers on accusations of plagiarism found in his 2015 PhD thesis, awarded by Liverpool John Moores University, and other academic writings. While Liverpool John Moores University had previously investigated these claims and attributed any issues to "honest and reasonable error," new information prompted Cambridge to launch its own inquiry. Beyond academic misconduct, questions also arose regarding his stated athletic and fundraising achievements, as well as alleged fabricated honorary university appointments.

Professor Arday has consistently denied deliberate wrongdoing, characterizing mistakes in his academic work as unintentional and suggesting that some criticism was racially motivated. He stated that the "relentless accusations, speculation and public commentary" significantly impacted him and his loved ones, leading to his decision to step down as a means to conclude the challenging period.
