Spanish leader slams ‘selfish’ EU response as death toll from Ceuta crossings climbs

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez recently criticized the European Union's response to a significant influx of migrants into the Spanish exclave of Ceuta, labeling it as "selfish, polarizing, and unlawful." His comments came as the death toll from mass crossings from Morocco climbed to at least 67 people, with casualties resulting from drownings and a stampede at a breakwater barrier. Sánchez particularly rejected calls from some EU nations, including Italy, to suspend Spain from the Schengen free-movement zone, attributing such reactions to prejudice and political motives.

The crisis unfolded rapidly as an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 migrants entered Ceuta within a short period, overwhelming the city's resources. In response, Spain deployed its military to secure the border and stated that the majority of those who crossed had been returned to Morocco. Spain is also installing a new containment barrier.

While Spain worked to regain control and provide humanitarian aid, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen affirmed that the EU had offered support from the outset. However, the incident exposed differing views within the bloc regarding migration policy and border integrity, with some nations tightening their own border checks with Spain. The surge in crossings was partly linked to a recent Spanish Supreme Court ruling regarding migrant returns, which authorities believe was misinterpreted and exploited by human trafficking networks.
