'Devastating' evidence against Charlie Kirk murder suspect laid out in court

A preliminary hearing has concluded for Tyler Robinson, the man accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk in September 2025 at Utah Valley University. Prosecutors presented what they described as "devastating" and "overwhelming" evidence, including DNA linking Robinson to the murder weapon, surveillance footage reportedly showing him on a rooftop "sniper pad," and alleged confessions made to his romantic partner and in messages. The defense, however, sought to cast doubt on the reliability of the DNA and ballistics evidence presented.

Robinson, who turned himself in a day after the shooting and did not testify during the hearing, faces charges of aggravated murder, with prosecutors seeking the death penalty. The court also heard testimony from a former campus police officer who discovered what appeared to be a sniper's perch near the scene.

Utah State District Judge Tony Graf will now review the extensive evidence and determine if there is sufficient cause to proceed with a full trial. A decision is not expected immediately, with further oral arguments scheduled for early September.
