Chinese coast guard fires water cannon at Philippine government ship with CNN crew aboard

Chinese Coast Guard vessels recently employed water cannons against Philippine government ships in the South China Sea, including one carrying a CNN news crew, near the disputed Scarborough Shoal. This incident on Friday, July 24, marked at least the third confrontation that week in the contested waters. Philippine authorities reported that a Chinese Coast Guard ship approached a Philippine vessel within seven meters, deeming it a "reckless" and dangerous maneuver.

The Philippine Coast Guard condemned the actions as "illegal, coercive, aggressive and deceptive," emphasizing that Scarborough Shoal is considered an integral part of Philippine territory. The Philippine ships were reportedly engaged in a mission to deliver fuel subsidies to Filipino fishermen when they were targeted.

China maintains its claim over the Scarborough Shoal, referring to it as Huangyan Dao and asserting that it is "inherent territory". Chinese officials criticized the Philippines for bringing reporters aboard, describing it as a "publicity stunt" that escalates tensions and undermines peace and stability in the region.
