China Sanctions US, Curbs Drone Exports Amid Rising Tensions Ahead of Xi Visit

China has announced new sanctions against several American entities and implemented stricter export controls on drones and related technologies destined for the United States. These measures, announced on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, come just weeks before a highly anticipated summit between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump scheduled for next month. The actions intensify economic tensions between the two global powers, who are striving to maintain "constructive strategic stability" amidst ongoing rivalry.

Beijing stated that these new sanctions and export controls are direct retaliation for recent moves by Washington. These include a US ban on imports from 43 Chinese companies over alleged human rights abuses, as well as the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) restrictions on imports of certain Chinese-made humanoid and quadruped robots and drone components.

Under the new regulations, exports of drones, their essential components, and associated technologies to the US will now undergo stringent case-by-case review. China's Ministry of Commerce emphasized that these "necessary countermeasures" were taken in response to US actions that "seriously violate" agreements between the two nations, urging the US to revoke its restrictions and cease what Beijing describes as "erroneous practices."
