Chinese teens are turning to mind-numbing drugs to 'run away from reality'

Chinese adolescents are increasingly misusing prescription drugs as a coping mechanism to "run away from reality," driven by intense academic pressure and fear of failure. Reports indicate that students, some as young as 14, are seeking out substances not prescribed to them, often through online channels, to achieve a "mind-numbing" or "pharmaceutical high" effect. This trend is emerging despite a reported decrease in newly identified drug users under 35 in China.

The motivation behind this concerning behavior stems primarily from the demanding educational system and the high expectations placed on young people, often exacerbated by an isolating environment with limited social outlets. Students describe using various prescription medications, including cough suppressants, neuropathic pain drugs, and anti-epileptic drugs, to alleviate anxiety, forget exam failures, or manage parental conflicts. These drugs, though sometimes difficult to obtain legally, are reportedly accessible online and are relatively inexpensive.

Experts and authorities in China acknowledge the growing problem of prescription drug misuse among minors, linking it to a broader mental health crisis among youth. The consequences include rapid memory deterioration, constant daze, and a heightened risk of self-harm. While the government aims to establish a nationwide psychological support system by 2030, professionals emphasize the need for open family conversations and a focus on mental well-being rather than solely attempting to suppress online drug sales.
