CIA chief in Moscow warns Russia against NATO attack; US not talking to Iran amid Hormuz diplomacy

CIA Director John Ratcliffe recently undertook a secretive trip to Moscow this week, primarily to issue a warning against any potential Russian aggression towards NATO member states. U.S. intelligence assessments indicated that Russia might be contemplating actions to test the alliance, particularly concerning the Baltic nations. During his visit, Ratcliffe also addressed the situation surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, informing Russian officials that the U.S. would impose further sanctions if the vital shipping lane remained closed and urging Russia to reduce its support for Iran.

While the U.S. is not currently engaged in direct dialogue with Iran, diplomatic efforts by regional mediators such as Pakistan, Oman, and Qatar are intensifying around the Strait of Hormuz. Iran and Oman have reportedly discussed proposals for reopening the strait, including a potential temporary shipping route, but Tehran has linked a full reopening to the lifting of a U.S. naval blockade and adherence to prior agreements.

However, the Kremlin, through spokesman Dmitry Peskov, dismissed the media reports regarding the purpose of Ratcliffe's visit as "scare stories" and denied any Russian intentions to attack NATO. U.S. President Donald Trump also downplayed the significance of the rare trip, characterizing it as "semi-routine."
