New Jersey Republican Congressman Tom Kean Jr. recently revealed that his four-month absence from Congress was due to a diagnosis and treatment for depression. In a House floor speech upon his return, Kean explained that he is a private individual, which initially led him to describe his condition only as a "personal medical issue." He had not cast a vote in the House since March 5, 2026.

Kean emphasized the profound nature of depression, describing it as a physical and emotional illness that is challenging to comprehend without direct experience. He recounted that doctors recommended inpatient treatment, believing it offered the quickest path to recovery, despite his initial reluctance given his responsibilities.

The Congressman expressed gratitude for seeking help, stating he has returned "healthier, stronger and excited" to resume his legislative duties. His extended absence had presented difficulties for House Republican leadership, who operate with a slim majority.
