Newly renovated Washington DC Reflecting Pool turns green with algae

Days after a $14 million renovation, the historic Reflecting Pool in Washington D.C. unexpectedly turned green due to a rapid algae bloom. The recent project, spearheaded by President Trump, aimed to give the pool an "American Flag Blue" appearance and incorporated advanced "nanobubbler technology" specifically designed to prevent algae growth.

Despite the extensive upgrades, which also involved painting the pool's basin, the water quickly became murky green, sparking public concern and attracting media attention. Officials from the Department of the Interior attributed the immediate bloom to "residual algae" from supply lines that had been dormant during the construction period.

National Park Service crews are now actively working to clean the pool, employing methods such as skimming and introducing hydrogen peroxide to combat the resilient algae. This unforeseen development has led to renewed efforts to restore the landmark's intended appearance ahead of national celebrations.
