Delta Flight 'Felt a Big Bang' After Apparently Being Hit by Firework While Landing in Chicago

A Delta Air Lines flight experienced an apparent firework strike while on descent into Chicago Midway International Airport on July 4, 2026. The pilot of Delta Flight 1076, originating from Atlanta, reported feeling a "big bang" at an altitude of approximately 200 to 250 feet around 8:30 p.m. local time.

Despite the impact, the Airbus A319, carrying 52 passengers and six crew members, landed safely, and no injuries were reported on board. Following the incident, the aircraft was removed from service for a thorough inspection. While initial mechanic evaluations found no significant damage, Chicago police noted minor paint damage on the plane.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently investigating the incident. Air traffic control audio from the time indicated multiple reports of fireworks activity in the area, with city officials having been alerted to the situation.
