Spain battles deadly wildfires, at least 12 killed and Britons among victims

Deadly wildfires have tragically claimed at least 12 lives in southern Spain, with rescue efforts ongoing as 23 individuals remain unaccounted for. The inferno, which has devastated parts of the Almería province, near Los Gallardos and Bedar, ranks among Spain's most destructive wildfires on record. Many of the deceased were found trapped in their vehicles or perished while attempting to flee the rapidly advancing flames on foot, despite official warnings to shelter in place.

Among the confirmed fatalities are at least four British nationals, who were reportedly found in a right-hand drive car. The widespread blazes have also led to eight injuries and necessitated the evacuation of numerous residents and tourists from the affected areas. Emergency services, including 150 firefighters and 220 soldiers, are relentlessly battling the fires, which have scorched thousands of hectares of land amidst scorching temperatures.

Authorities suspect a fallen power line may have initially sparked the fire, which then spread rapidly due to intense heatwave conditions across Western Europe. The tragic event underscores the severe challenges posed by extreme weather and fast-moving fires, particularly in regions prone to high temperatures.
