Tourist killed, 1,700 evacuated in major beach hotel fire in Dominican Republic

A massive fire swept through the Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham resort in Bayahibe, Dominican Republic, on Friday, June 19, 2026, resulting in one fatality and the evacuation of nearly 1,700 guests. The victim was identified as a 46-year-old Italian woman. In addition to the tragic death, three individuals required hospitalization, and six others received on-site medical attention for injuries.

The luxury resort, a popular destination on the country's southeastern coast, was extensively damaged by the blaze, which authorities believe spread rapidly due to strong winds and the highly flammable thatched roofing materials made of palm or cane. An investigation into the exact cause of the fire is currently underway.

Following the incident, all evacuated tourists were safely relocated to other hotels and nearby accommodations. Despite the significant damage to the Viva Dominicus Beach property, the adjacent Viva Dominicus Palace resort remained unaffected and is operating normally. Authorities have also confirmed that general tourism activities in the Bayahibe area are continuing without disruption.
