Amid growing concerns over an Ebola outbreak, recent patient recoveries are offering a glimmer of hope, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda where the Bundibugyo strain of the virus is currently active. The World Health Organization declared this ongoing outbreak a public health emergency of international concern in May 2026. While there are currently no approved vaccines or specific treatments for the Bundibugyo virus, five patients have recently recovered, demonstrating that survival is possible even in challenging circumstances.

In response to this critical situation, global efforts are accelerating the development of new countermeasures. The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) has committed significant funding to three investigational vaccine candidates specifically targeting the Bundibugyo ebolavirus. These include a Moderna mRNA vaccine, a ChAdOx1 platform vaccine from the University of Oxford (manufactured by the Serum Institute of India), and a single-dose rVSV vaccine developed by the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI). These initiatives aim to rapidly advance these candidates toward clinical trials in the coming months, offering a path to better control future outbreaks.
