Notorious Cartel Leader 'El Mayo' Zambada Sentenced to Life in US Prison

Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada, the long-feared co-founder and leader of Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel, was sentenced to life in a U.S. prison on Monday, July 20, 2026. The 76-year-old drug lord received his sentence without the possibility of parole from a federal judge in Brooklyn, New York, following his guilty plea in August 2025. Zambada was also ordered to forfeit $15 billion in connection with his extensive drug trafficking operations.

Zambada's sentencing marks a significant blow to the Sinaloa Cartel, an organization he led for years, especially after his partner Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán's capture in 2016. He pleaded guilty to leading a continuing criminal enterprise and racketeering violations, admitting to nearly four decades of trafficking vast quantities of fentanyl, cocaine, and other illicit drugs into the United States, as well as ordering ruthless acts of violence to protect his enterprise.

His arrest occurred in July 2024, with some reports indicating he was kidnapped and delivered to U.S. authorities by a son of "El Chapo" Guzmán. During his sentencing, Zambada expressed remorse for the harm he caused, stating, "I recognize the great harm illegal drugs have done to the people of the United States, of Mexico, and elsewhere. I take responsibility for my role in all of it and I apologize to everyone who has suffered or been affected by my actions."
