Putin Praises Elon Musk's 'Genius' Amid Plans for Russian Starlink Alternative

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently praised Elon Musk as a "real genius" during the Russia-Africa Summit in Moscow. This commendation came as Russia advances its own satellite internet system, named "Rassvet," intended to serve as a domestic alternative to SpaceX's Starlink. Putin further noted that Russia maintains contact with Musk and other American partners regarding satellite operations in low-Earth orbit to ensure order and avoid interference.

The Rassvet system is being developed with a primary focus on military applications, aiming to enhance communications, drone control, and targeting capabilities for Russian forces. Ukraine's military intelligence has identified numerous Russian and Belarusian companies involved in this project, expressing concerns about its potential security implications for Ukraine and beyond.

Russia has already launched initial satellites for the Rassvet constellation and plans to expand it significantly, with an objective of deploying approximately 300 satellites by 2028. This initiative highlights Russia's ambition to establish its own independent satellite communication network.
