An external review commissioned by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has revealed that Bill Gates and foundation staff met with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein approximately 30 times between 2011 and 2014. These meetings occurred despite internal concerns raised by employees regarding the reputational risks of associating with Epstein. The review, conducted by the law firm WilmerHale, found that the discussions primarily centered on a proposed public health fund that ultimately did not materialize and a grant to the International Peace Institute.
The investigation concluded there was no evidence that the Gates Foundation made any payments to Epstein or engaged in illegal activities. However, the review noted that Gates was aware of Epstein's prior sex offense conviction during these interactions. Bill Gates has previously stated that meeting with Epstein was a "grave error in judgment".
In response to the findings, the Gates Foundation released a three-page summary of the WilmerHale report and announced measures to strengthen its vetting processes and risk management protocols for future partnerships.
