A whistleblower linked to the Jeffrey Epstein case, Simon Andriesz, has died by suicide at the age of 57, prompting calls from British Members of Parliament for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. Andriesz, a former British Wall Street banker, had exposed alleged undisclosed business connections between Epstein and US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. He reportedly shared a 2018 email exchange discussing a joint investment in a company called Adfin, which contradicted Lutnick's public statements about his relationship with Epstein. Andriesz's death was confirmed by Andy Agathangelou, founder of the Transparency Task Force.
Andriesz had previously reported his concerns to the FBI in 2020 and 2021, though these allegations were reportedly not investigated. Before his death, he also made allegations of misconduct and whistleblower retaliation to the UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA). In response to his passing, UK lawmakers, including Labour MP John McDonnell, have urged for an independent investigation into the FCA's handling of Andriesz's case, stressing the need for whistleblower protection and thorough consideration of their disclosures.
The Financial Conduct Authority has acknowledged Andriesz's death and announced an internal review into its interactions with him. This review, to be led by new non-executive director Lea Paterson, aims to learn lessons for future cases, particularly after the FCA had previously concluded there was insufficient evidence of retaliation in Andriesz's claims. Andriesz's death reportedly occurred on September 23 in Thailand.
