Europe Scorched by Wildfires, Emergency Alerts Issued as Homes Destroyed

Europe is currently experiencing widespread and devastating wildfires, fueled by an ongoing summer of record-breaking heatwaves and severe drought conditions across the continent. This crisis has prompted emergency alerts and forced mass evacuations in numerous countries. The European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service noted that June and July 2026 were the warmest on record in Western Europe, contributing to landscapes becoming tinder-dry and highly susceptible to fires.

The fires have had a significant impact on several nations, with homes destroyed and lives disrupted. In Croatia, a major blaze near Omis on the Dalmatian coast resulted in one fatality, 40 injuries, and the evacuation of approximately 1,200 people, with multiple settlements experiencing home destruction. In the United Kingdom, wildfires in England and Wales have reached record levels for a second consecutive year, with a large grass fire in Stourbridge, central England, consuming 19 homes and damaging 18 others. A nationwide mobile phone alert was issued in England and Wales on August 14, 2026, cautioning residents about fire risks and advising against activities that could ignite new blazes.

Beyond the specified countries, wildfires are also raging in France, Spain, Greece, Germany, and Belgium, among others, leading to thousands more evacuations. Scientists attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of these heatwaves and associated wildfires to climate change. The scale of destruction this summer is substantial, with over 500,000 hectares affected by fires as of early August, surpassing the previous record set in 2025.
