Southern Europe grapples with extreme heat and deadly wildfires, causing widespread devastation

Southern Europe is currently facing a dual crisis of intense heatwaves and devastating wildfires, forcing widespread evacuations and resulting in significant loss of life and property across several nations. Countries like France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Italy are among those severely affected, with thousands of residents and tourists forced to flee their homes as blazes scorch vast areas of land. The fires have also severely impacted air quality in the affected regions.

This critical situation follows record-breaking heatwaves in May and June 2026, which dried out vegetation and created highly flammable conditions, leading to an unusually early start to the wildfire season. Firefighting efforts are ongoing, with national and EU resources deployed, but are hampered by persistent high temperatures, strong winds, and low humidity.
