Europe battles massive wildfires as heatwave looms; thousands evacuated in France

France and Spain are currently battling extensive and severe wildfires across multiple regions, intensified by an ongoing heatwave across Southern Europe. In France, authorities have evacuated hundreds of thousands of people, including over 220,000 from the Gironde region alone, as massive blazes continue to spread, approaching the city of Bordeaux. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez described these evacuations as likely the largest peacetime relocation in the country's history.

Neighboring Spain is also experiencing a critical wildfire situation, with a national emergency declared in areas around Madrid and Ávila due to uncontrolled fires. More than 90,000 people have been evacuated or confined in various Spanish regions, including central Spain, with an elderly man reported dead in Valencia. Fires near Madrid have merged, burning tens of thousands of hectares, and the Spanish Prime Minister has indicated difficult hours still lie ahead.

The current crisis is exacerbated by extreme heat, with July 2026 experiencing record-breaking temperatures following the hottest June on record for Western Europe. These tinderbox conditions, coupled with strong winds and prolonged drought, have caused the fires to spread rapidly and violently, making them difficult for firefighters to contain. The total land burned across the EU this year is already significantly above the long-term average, with authorities warning that extreme wildfire danger is expected to persist through August.
