Europe battles extreme heatwave: Wildfires near Paris, mass drownings, and rising death tolls

Europe is currently battling an array of wildfires of "exceptional scale" across several southern nations, fueled by intense heatwaves. These widespread blazes have devastated tens of thousands of hectares of land and forced thousands of residents to evacuate their homes. Countries like France, Spain, Portugal, and Greece are particularly affected, with officials reporting significant damage and ongoing efforts to control the infernos.

Notably, France has seen a "very virulent" fire erupt in the sprawling Fontainebleau forest, southeast of Paris, which has prompted the deployment of firefighting planes to the region, a measure typically reserved for the drier south. Meanwhile, Spain is also grappling with massive blazes, including one in its Almería province that tragically killed at least 12 people, many of whom were foreign residents.

In response to the crisis, European nations are deploying substantial resources, including hundreds of firefighters and numerous specialized aircraft from the EU's rescEU fleet. The European Union has activated its Civil Protection Mechanism to coordinate international assistance, highlighting the severe and ongoing nature of this summer's wildfire season across the continent.
