US journalist Evan Gershkovich has recently described his 16 months in a Russian jail, stating he realized he was a "pawn in a greater game" shortly after his arrest. He recounted being "lured into a trap" by Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) agents in March 2023 while on a reporting assignment in Yekaterinburg. Gershkovich, a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, was accused of espionage, charges he, his employer, and the U.S. government vehemently denied. He believes his case was fabricated to increase his value for a potential prisoner exchange.
After spending 491 days in detention, including time in Moscow's Lefortovo prison, Gershkovich was sentenced to 16 years in prison in July 2024 following a secret trial that the U.S. condemned as a sham. He was released on August 1, 2024, as part of a complex, large-scale prisoner exchange between Russia and Western countries, described as the biggest since the Cold War. This swap reportedly aimed to secure the release of Vadim Krasikov, a Russian assassin imprisoned in Germany.
Since his release, Gershkovich has shared that his detention led to panic attacks and insomnia, for which he has sought therapy for post-traumatic stress. He has expressed a desire to return to Russia for journalism, but only after Vladimir Putin is no longer in power.
