The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a stark warning regarding an impending public health crisis in Gaza as the rainy season approaches, further deteriorating an already critical situation. Water quality has significantly declined, with microbiological contamination in water samples nearly tripling from under six percent in January to over 18 percent by August of this year. This contamination is linked to a surge in acute watery diarrhea cases, which have almost doubled to over 48,000 by August.
The upcoming rains are expected to exacerbate these health risks, as flooding will spread sewage, waste, and contaminated water throughout overcrowded tent camps where most of Gaza's population resides. This grim outlook is compounded by nearly 90 percent of the region's water and sanitation infrastructure being destroyed or damaged. Standing water will also create breeding grounds for disease-carrying pests, while damp and flimsy shelters are prone to mold, potentially increasing respiratory illnesses.
Efforts to mitigate the crisis are severely hampered by ongoing restrictions on humanitarian aid and significant funding shortfalls. The WHO representative has urgently called for the unimpeded and expedited entry of essential supplies, including materials for shelter, sustainable water provisions, and waste management, to avert a catastrophic public health disaster.
