Scientists are making significant strides in gene-editing technology, hoping to offer a lifelong solution for high cholesterol. Recent breakthrough research involves a one-time gene-editing infusion designed to permanently modify specific genes in the liver that regulate cholesterol production. Early clinical trials have shown promising results, with therapies like VERVE-102 and CTX310 significantly reducing "bad" LDL cholesterol and triglycerides in patients whose conditions were resistant to standard medications.
These experimental treatments, utilizing technologies such as CRISPR-Cas9, target genes like PCSK9 and ANGPTL3 to effectively switch them off. In initial studies, participants experienced substantial and sustained reductions in LDL cholesterol, with some trials reporting decreases of up to 60-62% for LDL and around 50-55% for triglycerides, maintained for periods ranging from several months to over a year.
