Germany Accuses Russia of Drone Attack on Leipzig Airport, EU Considers Response

Germany has formally accused Russia of orchestrating a drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport in early August 2026. An explosive-laden drone was discovered near Ukrainian cargo planes at the airport on August 4th, with officials indicating that the detonator on the device failed to activate. This incident prompted a temporary closure of the airport and raised significant security concerns.

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that the configuration, components, explosives, and detonation technology of the drone were consistent with those observed in other Russian hybrid operations and in their conflict against Ukraine. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul described the attack as part of a deliberate effort by Russia to damage their bilateral relationship and destabilize European nations.

In response to the alleged attack, Germany announced several countermeasures, including the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn and the Russian House cultural center in Berlin. Germany also plans to propose adding more Russian individuals to European Union sanctions lists and tightening entry controls for Russian nationals. Russia has vehemently denied Germany's accusations, calling them "unsubstantiated, absurd and irrational."
