Germany warns of ‘new threat’ after explosives-packed drone targets airport in Leipzig

German authorities have issued a stark warning about a "new threat" to the country following an incident at Leipzig/Halle Airport where an explosives-packed drone was discovered. An airport employee found the drone, which was carrying an unknown explosive device, near a Ukrainian cargo aircraft on the south runway during the night of August 4-5, 2026. Police deployed an explosives disposal robot to defuse the device, reportedly a modified drone containing PETN and Semtex, which failed to detonate due to a faulty component.

The incident prompted German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt to declare that the event represented a "new quality of danger" and a "professional hybrid threat scenario." The airport briefly closed its north runway, diverting several flights, though officials confirmed no danger to passengers or staff. Investigations into who is responsible, the nature of the explosives, and the drone's origin are being led by prosecutors specializing in politically motivated and extremist crimes.

Adding to the complexity, a second unidentified flying object reportedly collided with a DHL cargo aircraft that was aborting its landing due to the runway closure. The plane sustained minor damage after diverting to Hannover airport, and authorities are currently searching for debris from this object. While German officials have not publicly named any suspects, the airport's strategic role as a NATO logistics hub and base for Ukrainian cargo operations has led to suggestions of potential foreign involvement, with some Ukrainian officials directly blaming Russia.
