Gibraltar ushers in a new era as British territory's border fence with Spain is removed

Gibraltar and Spain have entered a new era following the removal of their physical border fence and the elimination of border controls on July 15, 2026. This significant change comes after years of post-Brexit negotiations, culminating in a historic treaty between the European Union and the United Kingdom signed in 2025.

The agreement facilitates greater freedom of movement, effectively integrating Gibraltar into the Schengen area for people, while the territory remains a British Overseas Territory outside the EU. This move is expected to bring substantial economic benefits, particularly for the approximately 15,000 daily cross-border workers who will now experience smoother commutes.

The removal of the century-old barrier, erected in 1908, has been widely celebrated as an end to a "bygone era of friction." Although the treaty does not resolve the long-standing sovereignty dispute, new smart border technology, including facial recognition cameras, will manage crossings at Gibraltar's airport and seaport, with Spanish officials helping to ensure Schengen integrity.
