Western Europe Shatters Temperature Records Amid Widespread Drought and Soaring Ocean Heat

The summer of 2026 has brought unprecedented climate challenges across North America and Europe, marked by severe heatwaves, extensive wildfires, and record-breaking ocean temperatures. Western Europe experienced its hottest June-July period on record, with multiple heatwaves pushing temperatures to new highs across numerous countries including France, Spain, and the UK. This intense heat has also fueled widespread and extreme wildfires across the continent, with Spain battling its largest blaze on record and overall burned land approaching 2025's high.

Simultaneously, North America has endured its own significant heatwave since late June 2026, with record temperatures reported in major cities across the United States and Canada. This extreme heat contributed to strained public services in the US and, in Canada, led to thunderstorms that caused widespread flooding and power outages. Wildfires ignited across Canada, releasing vast smoke plumes that impacted air quality in both Canadian and major US cities, while the US also experienced large fires in its western states.

Adding to the global environmental strain, ocean temperatures reached historic levels. July 2026 recorded the highest global ocean surface temperatures ever for that month, particularly in non-polar regions, surpassing previous records set in 2023. European coastal waters, including the Atlantic and western Mediterranean, also experienced record high sea surface temperatures, resulting in widespread marine heatwaves. These conditions are partly influenced by developing El Niño conditions in the tropical Pacific, which are anticipated to strengthen further.
