Deadly Flash Flood Hits Grand Canyon Lodge, Leaving Casualties and Missing Persons

A sudden and severe flash flood tore through sections of the Grand Canyon on Saturday, August 29, 2026, leading to at least two confirmed fatalities. The torrent of water and debris particularly impacted the Bright Angel Canyon and Phantom Ranch areas. Search and recovery operations are actively underway for approximately 15 individuals who remain missing or unaccounted for following the devastating event.

The rapid floodwaters caused extensive damage to vital park infrastructure. Nearly all footbridges spanning Bright Angel Creek were destroyed, severely hindering access across the waterway. Additionally, the sole water pipeline supplying both visitors and residents within the park was significantly compromised, resulting in emergency water restrictions and the closure of overnight lodging for tourists. Over 60 people were evacuated from the affected areas, many by helicopter, as park officials work to assess the full extent of the damage and account for all individuals. The National Weather Service warned of a continued elevated risk of flash flooding in the area through Monday, August 31, 2026.
