Guatemala's Fuego Volcano Erupts, Forcing Hundreds to Evacuate

Guatemala's Fuego volcano has entered a "critical explosive phase," prompting the evacuation of hundreds of residents from communities in its vicinity. The eruption, which began on Monday morning, August 3, 2026, intensified significantly by nightfall, with lava flows and ash plumes reaching up to six kilometers into the sky. Guatemala's disaster coordination agency, CONRED, issued an orange alert nationwide, escalating to red for affected departments, and officials urged self-evacuation for those at risk.

The volcano's heightened activity included the descent of pyroclastic density currents through various ravines, posing a severe threat to nearby populations. Authorities reported the evacuation of at least 659 people from eight villages, with expectations for further relocations.

In response to the escalating situation, a major highway, National Route 14, was closed, and face-to-face classes were suspended in affected municipalities. Fuego, one of Central America's most active volcanoes, is located approximately 35 to 100 kilometers from Guatemala City, and its eruptions frequently necessitate mass evacuations due to its volatile nature.
