Houthis claim attacks on Saudi oil facility and Yemeni port amid regional escalation

Yemen's Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for recent attacks on a Saudi Arabian oil facility and a Yemeni port, marking an escalation in regional hostilities. On Sunday, August 9, 2026, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree stated that a drone targeted an Aramco refinery in Jizan, southwestern Saudi Arabia. The group cited alleged Saudi drone breaches of Yemeni airspace as the reason for the assault.

In response to the Jizan attack, the Saudi Energy Ministry confirmed a fire at an Aramco facility, which was later extinguished without any reported casualties, though the cause was not specified. Separately, the Houthis also conducted missile and drone strikes on the Yemeni Red Sea port city of Mocha. This attack resulted in at least seven fatalities, including four troops and three civilians, with an additional fifteen civilians injured, and caused significant damage to port infrastructure and goods.

These latest actions contribute to an ongoing series of Houthi strikes targeting Saudi Arabia and Red Sea shipping, raising concerns about a potential resurgence of widespread conflict in Yemen, years after a major truce. The attacks also follow closely on the heels of a defense agreement signed by Saudi Arabia with Turkey and Pakistan.
