US teenager appears in court over alleged Hindu temple shooting plot

A 19-year-old US teenager, Alexandros Paporakis of Palatine, Illinois, has appeared in court following his arrest in connection with an alleged plot to carry out a mass shooting at a Hindu temple in Aurora, Illinois. Authorities apprehended Paporakis after a coworker reported receiving concerning electronic communications from him, leading to an investigation that uncovered an alleged plan for an attack.

During a search of Paporakis's home, detectives reportedly recovered a rifle, numerous loaded magazines, hundreds of rounds of ammunition, and a tactical vest with body armor displaying imagery associated with white supremacist extremism. Prosecutors allege Paporakis sent an eight-page document, titled "Why I fought: A.K.A.: (Aurora Shooter's Manifesto)," containing white supremacist and extremist views, including references to violence against South Asians and Indian people, whom he described as "subhumans." Paporakis faces felony charges of making a terrorist threat and unlawful possession of weapons, and a judge has ordered him to remain in custody.

The alleged plot has raised significant concerns about rising anti-Indian racism, with India's Ministry of External Affairs expressing deep concern over the reported anti-Hindu and racist nature of the plan. The ministry emphasized the need for greater vigilance and decisive action against hate-motivated violence to ensure the safety of the Indian community in the US, expecting a thorough investigation from US authorities.
