The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has issued a warning that a significant correction in the valuation of artificial intelligence (AI) related shares could pose a substantial threat to global financial stability. In its latest Global Financial Stability Report, released on October 13, 2026, the IMF highlighted that the elevated valuations of AI companies, combined with their growing debt, contribute to "elevated" risks within the financial system. The organization cautioned that the repercussions of an AI market correction could be widespread, disproportionately affecting Asian markets and global investors holding U.S. assets.
The IMF identified a potential AI-driven market correction as one of three primary risks to financial stability, alongside rising government borrowing costs and the escalating threat of major cyberattacks. The report pointed to the interconnectedness of large AI firms, extensive borrowing to finance sector investments, and intricate "circular financing" arrangements as factors that could amplify any downturn. The institution also noted growing indications that the actual investment required for a successful AI rollout might be less than current levels, and the anticipated economic benefits may not be as substantial as expected.
Athanasios Vamvakidis, Deputy Director of the IMF's Monetary and Capital Markets Department, emphasized that while global risk sentiment is currently robust, this resilience does not guarantee safety. He highlighted that global exposure to U.S. assets, particularly in the AI sector, has reached unprecedented levels. A sharp decline in AI investment, spurred by disappointing productivity gains or profitability, could trigger a significant fall in asset prices and ultimately reduce global GDP.
