India's "Cockroach Movement" intensifies as youth demand reforms; opposition leader detained

India's youth-led "Cockroach Movement," officially known as the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), has intensified its protests across New Delhi, demanding significant education reforms and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The movement, founded in May 2026 by Abhijeet Dipke, began as a satirical response to a Supreme Court judge's comments that reportedly likened unemployed youth to "cockroaches" and "parasites." The CJP gained rapid online popularity before transitioning to large-scale street demonstrations, primarily fueled by widespread frustration over alleged examination system failures, including the 2026 NEET paper leak.

The protests escalated this week, with thousands of demonstrators gathering in the capital, leading to clashes with police who deployed tear gas and baton charges, resulting in injuries to both protesters and law enforcement personnel. On Tuesday, opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and several members of his Congress party were briefly detained after staging a sit-in outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence in solidarity with the movement. Gandhi accused the Modi government of "destroying the future of India's youth" and called for the Prime Minister's resignation amid the growing unrest.

Despite the police crackdown and detentions, including that of activist Sonam Wangchuk who was forcibly hospitalized after a hunger strike, the "Cockroach Movement" has vowed to continue its demonstrations. The youth-led initiative, which has expanded its focus to encompass broader calls for government accountability, represents a significant public challenge to Prime Minister Modi's administration, with protesters resolute in their demands until reforms are enacted.
