India’s ‘cockroach’ protests are spreading; Gen Z flips Modi’s social media game

India is currently experiencing a growing protest movement, humorously termed the "Cockroach Janta Party" (CJP), which began in May 2026. The movement originated online after Supreme Court Chief Justice Surya Kant reportedly referred to some unemployed young people as "cockroaches" and "parasites." Public relations graduate Abhijeet Dipke then founded the CJP as a satirical response, which quickly gained significant traction across social media platforms.

These youth-led demonstrations are primarily fueled by widespread anger over systemic exam fraud, including frequent paper leaks in crucial competitive entrance examinations for colleges and government jobs, as well as irregularities in online marking. The "Cockroach" protesters, largely from Gen Z, have effectively utilized social media to organize rallies, share evidence of alleged police excesses, and amplify their demands for accountability. The movement's agenda has also broadened to include concerns about youth unemployment and a perceived lack of opportunities.

The online outrage has translated into large-scale street protests, particularly in New Delhi, where thousands have rallied and attempted to march to parliament, resulting in clashes with police who used tear gas and batons. Prominent activist Sonam Wangchuk has further highlighted the movement through a hunger strike. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his first direct comments on the escalating unrest on July 23, 2026, vowed "stringent punishment" for those involved in exam fraud and promised to establish fast-track courts. Protesters continue to demand the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and comprehensive reforms to the examination system.
