Iran sets new conditions for Strait of Hormuz deal, demands US ‘correct behavior’

Iran is reportedly close to an agreement with Oman regarding a temporary navigation route through the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to define a transit passage for vessels. However, Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, have clarified that this potential deal will not lead to the full reopening of the critical waterway. They insist that the comprehensive reopening of the Strait is contingent upon the United States meeting a series of significant demands.

Tehran's conditions for allowing full transit through the Strait of Hormuz include the US ending threats against Iran, permanently ceasing military actions against Iran and its regional allies, lifting the naval blockade on Iranian ports, and withdrawing US military forces from the area. Additionally, Iran is demanding full compensation for war damages, the complete lifting of sanctions, and the unconditional release of all frozen Iranian assets. Some reports also indicate Iran's desire to impose tolls on cargo and restrict US and Israeli vessels.

While US officials have expressed optimism about the ongoing discussions and indicated a readiness to lift the blockade of Iranian ports once commercial shipping can resume without impediments, they oppose Iran's unilateral control or imposition of tolls in the international waterway. The continued impasse, stemming from the strait's closure after a conflict began in February and the collapse of a June interim deal, continues to affect global energy supplies and fuel prices.
