US-Iran Tensions Escalate Over Strait of Hormuz Amidst Oil Stockpile Concerns

Iran has issued a stern warning to the United States regarding the Strait of Hormuz, cautioning against "bigger miscalculations" stemming from what it describes as "fake intelligence." This comes as Tehran moves to significantly strengthen its control over the vital waterway, asserting a new reality for international maritime traffic. Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, emphasized this stance amid ongoing regional tensions.

As part of its strategy, Iran is preparing a comprehensive bill that would prohibit military and commercial vessels from nations it deems "hostile" from entering the Persian Gulf without its explicit authorization. Additionally, Iran has established the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) to institutionalize its control over the critical chokepoint. There are also reports of an upcoming agreement between Iran and Oman to create a new agency to manage sea traffic and levy charges on ships transiting the strait.

The Strait of Hormuz remains largely blocked, with Iran's PGSA insisting it will not reopen until Tehran's conditions are met, directly contradicting claims by U.S. officials. This deadlock, alongside recent attacks on shipping in the region, has fueled concerns about disruptions to Middle Eastern oil supplies, with the International Energy Agency warning of rapidly diminishing global oil stockpiles. Iran's demands for reopening include an end to the U.S. war and blockade, the release of its frozen assets, and a regional ceasefire.
