Violence escalates in Israel and Palestine amid demolitions, draft protests & border attacks

Tensions are escalating across Israel and Palestine, marked by a surge in Israeli demolitions in East Jerusalem, widespread protests against mandatory military conscription for ultra-Orthodox Jews, and ongoing cross-border hostilities in southern Lebanon and the Gaza Strip. The multiple fronts of conflict and internal unrest highlight a deteriorating security and political environment in the region.

In East Jerusalem, Israeli authorities have significantly increased demolitions and evictions of Palestinian structures, with over 116 demolitions recorded this year following a 70% increase in 2025, which saw over 260 structures razed. Palestinian residents report extreme difficulty in obtaining building permits, leading to a continuous cycle of displacement. Concurrently, Israel has faced substantial internal upheaval as tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews have protested attempts to end their long-standing exemption from military service, disrupting major transportation routes and leading to clashes with police.

Cross-border violence also remains a critical concern. In southern Lebanon, Israeli airstrikes killed at least 18 people on June 11, while Hezbollah has intensified its attacks against Israeli forces and territory, launching nearly 200 attack waves in the first week of June. Meanwhile, in the Gaza Strip, Israeli forces have continued airstrikes and operations despite a nominal ceasefire from October 2025, resulting in hundreds of Palestinian deaths and further humanitarian challenges, including the closure of vital border crossings for aid.
