International condemnation grows as Israel expands settlements amid Gaza's humanitarian crisis

International condemnation has escalated against Israel's continued expansion of settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories, particularly the advancement of the E1 project near East Jerusalem. Western nations, including the UK, Germany, and Canada, alongside several Arab and Islamic states, have strongly denounced these actions, with many deeming them illegal under international law and a significant impediment to a two-state solution. The United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution in March 2026 reaffirming the illegality of settlements, and the UN Secretary-General has expressed deep alarm over the new outposts. Critics argue that the E1 plan specifically threatens to sever the territorial contiguity between East Jerusalem and the West Bank, undermining prospects for an independent Palestinian state.
