A consortium backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has officially acquired a significant minority stake in Liverpool Football Club. The deal, valued at approximately £1.65 billion, sees the consortium secure roughly one-third of the Premier League club. The acquisition was announced on Friday by Liverpool's current owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG).
The investor group, named 1892 Holdings, is led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia and includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. While Jeff Bezos is a lead investor in the K5 Sports fund, which is part of the consortium, Fenway Sports Group will retain majority ownership and operational control of Liverpool FC following the transaction.
This marks Jeff Bezos's initial foray into professional sports team ownership. As part of the new arrangement, Amit Bhatia will assume the role of Liverpool's vice chairman, and Bryan Baum, K5 Sports founder, along with Elaine Saverin, are expected to join the club's board. Bezos, however, will not take a seat on the board.
