Johnson & Johnson offers $5.5 billion to settle thousands of baby powder lawsuits

Johnson & Johnson has proposed a $5.5 billion settlement to resolve tens of thousands of lawsuits alleging its talcum powder products caused ovarian cancer. The pharmaceutical giant announced the offer on Monday, July 27, 2026, aiming to bring an end to a protracted legal battle that has spanned over a decade. The proposed settlement covers approximately 69,000 to 76,000 claims in US federal and state courts, representing nearly all outstanding talc-related cases.

The agreement is contingent upon the participation of at least 95% of the remaining claimants. While Johnson & Johnson continues to deny that its talc-based products are carcinogenic, stating the claims lack scientific merit, the company's vice president of litigation, Erik Haas, noted the settlement provides an opportunity for closure. J&J ceased selling its talc-based baby powder in the United States and Canada in 2020, and globally in 2023.

This latest proposal follows several unsuccessful attempts by Johnson & Johnson to resolve the litigation through bankruptcy proceedings. Plaintiffs' attorneys have expressed satisfaction with the uncapped settlement, which some estimate could potentially reach over $7 billion depending on claimant participation, offering fair compensation to those affected.
