Historic Kyiv Pechersk Lavra Monastery on Fire After Major Russian Attack

Ukraine's historic Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery suffered a significant fire on the morning of Monday, June 15, 2026, following a major Russian aerial attack on the capital. The blaze primarily engulfed the roof of the Dormition Cathedral, a central structure within the ancient complex. This UNESCO World Heritage site, dating back to the 11th century, is considered one of Ukraine's most sacred Orthodox religious landmarks, and its damage raises serious concerns about the destruction of cultural heritage.

The extensive Russian missile and drone barrage caused widespread disruption across Kyiv. Beyond the monastery fire, the attacks damaged numerous residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure, leaving approximately 140,000 residents without electricity.
